I had a
short stint practicing law in Milwaukie, Oregon, and, then, worked for a
title company for three years before re-entering the practice of law in
Madras, Oregon in 1968. In 1969, I became the District Attorney for
Jefferson County and stayed in that position for four years and, then,
relocated to Bend, Oregon in July of 1973 where I resumed the private
practice of law.
Along the way I’ve been involved in several
professional organizations. I’ve held several offices in the Central
Oregon Bar Association, including President; been Chairman of the
Executive Committee of the Litigation Section of the Oregon State Bar
Association and served on the Board of Directors of the Oregon Criminal
Defense Lawyers Association. I am a Master in the J.R. Campbell Inns of
Court and have served on the State of Oregon Indigent Defense Board,
being appointed by then Chief Justice Edwin Peterson of the Oregon
Supreme Court. Additionally, I helped organize a Central Oregon
association of family law practitioners and another Central Oregon
association of criminal law practitioners.
In the community, I served for many years on the
"committee" for Central Oregon Young Life, served for six years on the
Deschutes County Fair Association and served for several years on the
Board of Directors of J Bar J Ranch, a juvenile facility.
In some ways, I am like your family practitioner
medical doctor. My law practice is a general practice with emphasis on
probate and estate planning, domestic relations law, criminal and
juvenile law and general trial and appellate work. I also do elder law,
construction law, real estate law and business law. In other areas,
including personal injury work, I’ll do initial interviews and screening
(most times without charging a fee) and, then refer the matter to the
appropriate specialist in the field.
When I am in my office, I have a real interest in my
clients and their lives, but out of the office my wife and I tend to
associate with a few close friends and our relatives and enjoy being
entertained by our grandchildren.
During the years I have practiced law, I have been
very blessed to have great staff and good clients with which to work. At
times, I have thought of curtailing the number of clients I take, but
each time I have those thoughts, I remember how many interesting people
with interesting legal issues that I might miss.
